This is a wood carving craft made in Hokkaido(*1), Japan. Hokkaido is home to many bears, so the bear motif is used.

(*1)[木彫工芸] Many of the wood carvings in Hokkaido are carved from white birch wood. Ainu(*2) crafts are one such craft, and many of them are handcrafted using familiar materials and motifs from everyday life. Therefore, it is interesting that each piece is simple and the craftsmanship of the craftsman is different.

(*2)[アイヌ工芸] Ainu crafts are crafts created by the Ainu people in their daily lives with respect and gratitude towards nature. The Ainu people are an indigenous people of Japan who have lived around the northern part of the Japanese archipelago. The Ainu people believe that a spirit resides in everything, including the natural world, and have cherished coexistence with all living things.
